Phil Mendelson Wins DC Latino Caucus Endorsement by More than 4 to 1
June 25, 2010—Councilmember Phil Mendelson again showed overwhelming strength at the DC Latino Caucus Endorsement Forum last night building up a commanding lead over his competitors in a series of votes across the District. The DC Latino Caucus vote is the fourth in a series of ballots over the past several weeks where Phil has shown that his base of Democratic support across the District is both broad and deep.
When the Latino Caucus votes were totaled, Phil topped both Clark Ray and Senator Michael Brown by margins of greater than a 4 to 1.
In his statement after the results of the Latino Caucus were announced, Mendelson said, “I deeply appreciate the vote of support that the members of the Caucus have given me. It’s clear that the community knows my strong record of defending the rights of all groups for fair and equal treatment in the District of Columbia, my fight to support funding for the of Office of Latino Affairs, a lifetime supporting rent control, affordable housing, and inclusionary zoning and how I have consistently voted to support a living wage with decent benefits for working men and women in the District.”
As Chair of the Committee on Public Safety and the Judiciary, Phil Mendelson is the Council’s leading defender of civil liberties and has been vigilant in assuring that MPD not use racial and ethnic profiling. He is now rewriting the laws regarding “disorderly conduct” which is often misused to target minority and ethnic groups.
Phil Mendelson also wrote the bill to prohibit the District government from participating in Secure Communities program, a bill that was co-introduced by all 13 Councilmembers. He recognizes the adverse effects on public safety from sending arrest records to ICE—in effect discouraging victims from reporting crimes, as well as disrupting the lives of those who are jailed pending a determination of their fate.
“Immigration reform should be a federal matter,” says Mendelson, “I strongly disagree with what the State of Arizona has passed and what Prince William County in Virginia is now looking to enact. This country was founded by immigrants; immigration is a rich part of our history. It should be welcomed, not criminalized.”
